In traditional Iranian medicine, Anjbar (bistort) is one of the most widely used drugs to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. Menstrual hypermenorrhea is the loss of more than 80 ml of blood during each menstrual period. Polymenorrhea refers to bleeding every 21 days or even shorter and irregular intervals. The most common causes of abnormal uterine bleeding are genital diseases, thyroid disorders, suppression of the hypothalamus, including stress, weight loss, and so on. Treatment with chemical drugs includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-fibrinolytic drugs such as tranexamic acid, contraceptives, etc., each of which has side effects and patients are more likely to use herbal medicines. Herbal medicines generally have fewer side effects and sometimes higher efficacy than chemical drugs. Anjebar Booali Daroo Syrup contains a combination of Polygonum bistorta, ceratonia siliqua, adenanthera pavonina, santalum album, and myrtus communis, which are effective in stopping bleeding and also in treating abnormal uterine bleeding, and some of these components have been studied.
Bistorta is a shrub of the polygonome family, also known in traditional medicine as Anarif. It also has blood coagulation, anti-fever, astringent, diuretic, laxative, wound healing, and anti-tumor properties. Previous studies proved that a group of compounds called dense tannins in combination with metal ions increase the rate of blood coagulation.
In traditional medicine, the myrtus communis fruit has been introduced as one of the most effective herbs for reducing abnormal uterine bleeding. For this purpose, a clinical trial was conducted under the title of the effect of myrtus communis syrup on women with abnormal uterine bleeding. In this study, patients were divided into experimental and control groups. The control group, placebo and experimental group received the 5-ml myrtus communis syrup three times a day for 7 days after the onset of bleeding. This study was repeated in three consecutive menstrual periods. The results of the study showed a significant reduction in the number of bleeding days and pads used in the three periods in the intervention group. It can be concluded that the myrtus communis syrup can be introduced as a treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding.
An animal study investigated the effect of ceratonia siliqua in improving the adverse effects of monosodium glutamate on the reproductive organs of female rats. In this study, 24 rats were divided into 4 groups. The details of the treated groups are as follows: the first group (control) received 0.5 ml of saline solution, the second group received a diet containing 5% ceratonia silique powder, the third group was treated with 400 mg / kg monosodium glutamate on daily basis for one month, the fourth group received 400 mg / kg monosodium glutamate+5% ceratonia silique powder. The results showed that the monosodium glutamate significantly reduced serum estrogen levels and caused tissue lesions in the ovaries of mice, including stroma, duct obstruction and fragmented oocytes, but administration of 5% ceratonia silique powder improved tissue lesions of ovary, uterus, and vagina.
