From the perspective of the Iranian School of Traditional Medicine, many diseases that affect different parts of the body are caused by digestive system disorders. The health of stomach as one of the most important and effective organs of the gastrointestinal tract, is of paramount importance. The liver is also one of the most important and vital organs of the body that is involved in regulating many physiological activities. Any liver dysfunction causes a series of disorders that can cause irreversible damage to other organs. Factors such as oxidative stress, free radicals, alcohol consumption, chemicals, viruses, and drugs can damage liver tissue. Physiological activities in which the liver is involved include detoxifying from drugs and food, production of blood coagulation factors, storage of sugar as glycogen, regulation of sugar and fat metabolism, as well as defense against microbes.
From the point of view of traditional Iranian medicine, liver dysfunction causes a disturbance between the humors and the formation of various dystemperaments, which can eventually lead to various diseases. One of the types of liver diseases is liver obstruction, which refers to narrowing and closing of cells, ducts, and arteries is. Liver obstruction has a high pathogenicity in the liver and sekanjabin syrup is one of the effective treatments for it.
Sekanjabin is one of the most important medicinal forms in traditional Iranian medicine, in which acetic acid and honey are used as basic components with other additives. From the perspective of Iranian traditional medicine, this product has many applications in maintaining human health. Reports also show that sekanjabin is useful in expelling phlegm from the stomach and opening of the soddeh(obsrtruction). In modern medicine, many studies have been done on the effects of acetic acid and honey.
An experimental study was performed on the anti-apoptotic and protective effect of acetic acid on liver tissue and lipid profiles in rats. A total of 24 rats were divided into 3 groups, which included the control group, high-fat diet and high-fat diet with acetic acid. Examination of liver enzymes, lipid profile, apoptosis, steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis of the liver showed that acetic acid caused a significant reduction in apoptosis, steatosis, tissue inflammation, and central vein fibrosis occurs in liver. Also, triglyceride levels decreased and HDL levels increased significantly in the acetic acid-treated group. However, there was no significant difference in cholesterol and LDL levels as well as liver enzymes.
An animal experiment was carried out on the effect of apple cider vinegar on the liver histological changes of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Rats were fed 2 ml / kg of apple cider vinegar for 30 days. The results showed that apple cider vinegar significantly reduced glucose and lipid profile of rats compared to the control sample and the liver toxicity of mice was minimized.
One study investigated the protective effect of honey on melamine-induced hepatotoxicity (cyanamide derivatives) in rats. In this study, honey was given to rats (5.5 g / kg) for 28 days. The results of this study showed that honey has the ability to protect the liver against melamine toxicity and improve liver function.
Another study investigated the protective effect of honey on acrylamide-induced liver tissue damage in rats. In this study, different doses of honey showed a significant reduction in the severity of liver damage compared to the control sample, which could be due to the antioxidant activity of honey.
The results of recent studies and sources of traditional medicine indicate the effects of sekanjabin on the protection of liver and stomach health.
