From the perspective of the traditional Iranian medicine, many diseases that occur in different parts of the body can be caused in some way by foods, drinks, disorders and diseases of the digestive system. Therefore, diseases of stomach, as one of the most important and effective organs of the gastrointestinal tract, are of special importance. In traditional Iranian medicine references, the causes of stomach pain, which seem to be functional pain in most cases, are explained and the treatment is specified. According to traditional pathology, the cause of gastric gas or wind can be the result of consuming some gas-producing foods such as beans or foods that have a lot of moisture such as apples, pears, and yogurt. Hazem Booali Daroo powder® contains a combination of herbs, plantago major, zataria multiflora, satureja hortensis, nigella sativa, and carum carvi, whose effectiveness has been confirmed in authentic traditional medicine articles. Many studies stated that satureja hortensis have antispasmodic, stomach-strengthening, and digestion strength properties. Nigella sativa has many properties in treating stomach ulcers and regulating the body’s digestive system. Authentic traditional medicine books and references demonstrated that zataria multiflora has stomach-strengthening property.
Plantago major is used in traditional medicine to treat digestive disorders. In an animal study, 72 rats with indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer received plantago major at doses of 200, 400, and 800 mg / kg, and the results were compared with Ranitidine. The results showed that all doses significantly reduced acid secretion and also significantly reduced the ulcer index. A clinical trial was carried out on 50 patients to evaluate the effect of gastrolit drop on gastric residual volume among patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. Patients were included in the study using purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of intervention (gastrolit containing zataria multiflora) and control (placebo or water) using 20 drops three times a day. The results showed that gastrolit drop can reduce the gastric residual volume among patients undergoing mechanical ventilation admitted to intensive care units.
A double-blind clinical trial compared the effect of satureja hortensis with placebo in improving the symptoms of mild-to-moderate gastric reflux among 58 adult patients. Patients were divided into two groups; i.e. drug and placebo and both groups received their drug (500 mg) three times a day with a lifestyle modification program. The results of this study showed a significant decrease in gastric reflux scores in the satureja hortensis group. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted to investigate the effect of zataria multiflora on the gastrointestinal symptoms of 70 ICU nurses. Subjects were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Zataria multiflora was used in the intervention group, and placebo was used in the control group for one month. At the end of study, their gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated. The results showed that zataria multiflora was effective in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms and its use can be recommended to nurses suffering from gastrointestinal disorders to alleviate these symptoms.
