Drug therapeutic effects:
Menstruation is the periodic uterine bleeding experienced by most women at childbearing age . The importance of regular menstrual cycles is to the extent that they are considered as one of the vital signs of women. Normal frequency, duration, and bleeding volume of menstrual cycle is 21-35 days, 3-7 days, and 30-80 ml, respectively. Common menstrual disorders including menorrhagia (bleeding duration of more than 7 days or bleeding volume of more than 80 ml) and metrorrhagia (irregular menstruation and bleeding at any time between two menstrual cycles).
Traditional medicine has paid a special attention to the treatment of gynecological diseases, and has dedicated a separate chapter for it. Frequent menstruation is divided into two categories in the pre traditional medicine as follows: (a) increased menstrual bleeding; (b) continued menstrual bleeding or bleeding in other time periods other than monthly menstruation.
Medicinal herbs have been effective in treating these diseases, and many studies have been carried out on their effects. One of these herbs is pomegranate, with the scientific name of punica granatum, which contains isoflavonoid and anthocyanidin compounds.
To compare the effect of pomegranate and tranexamic acid on Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), a double-blind randomized clinical trial was performed on 94 female patients. Subjects consumed either pomegranate or tranexamic acid for five days after menstruation. Bleeding volume was measured using the pictorial blood loss assessment chart (PBAC) and subjects performed the protocol for 3 consecutive menstrual periods. After three periods, the results showed that both pomegranate and tranexamic acid significantly and equally reduced the duration and volume of menstrual bleeding. Besides, considering concerns about the possibility of thromboembolism in patients treated with anti-fibrinolytic agents, pomegranate may be considered as a reliable alternative to anti-fibrinolytic drugs in patients with menorrhagia.
In addition to clinical and laboratory studies, pomegranate has been highly recommended for the
treatment of hemorrhage in the traditional medicine books, and in order to eliminate side effects,
tragacanth has also been introduced.
