Microbiology Laboratory Equipment
Incubator
The incubator is one of the most commonly used pieces of equipment in microbiology laboratories. Its primary function is to maintain the necessary conditions, such as oxygen, humidity, temperature, and other factors, for the survival and growth of microorganisms. There are various types of incubators with different applications.
These include refrigerated incubators set at 25°C for the growth of molds and yeasts, thermal incubators at 32.5°C for the growth of aerobic microorganisms and pathogens, and incubators set at 41.5°C for the growth of Salmonella
Autoclave
The autoclave is another essential piece of laboratory equipment commonly used in microbiology laboratories. Its primary function is to sterilize equipment and culture media using steam heat under pressure.
The autoclave operates based on the thermodynamic properties of water, which is a pure substance. Water boils and turns into steam at 100°C when at atmospheric pressure. If the pressure is reduced, water boils at a lower temperature, and if the pressure is increased, it boils at a higher temperature. In this device, by controlling the pressure of steam, the temperature inside the autoclave can exceed 100°C, and with temperature control, the pressure can exceed one atmosphere.
This device is used for sterilizing materials and containers.
Laminar Hood
The laminar hood, or microbiological hood, is a physical chamber made of stainless steel with a powder-coated finish. It is designed with no cracks or gaps, preventing the entry and growth of any fungi, bacteria, or sediment.
In essence, the laminar hood provides a workspace that is free from any contaminating particles.
Microscope
A microscope is a device that can produce an enlarged image of small objects and allows us to view very close details of tiny structures at an appropriate scale for analysis and examination.
In general, the microscope is an instrument used for magnifying small objects, and some microscopes are capable of observing objects within cells, such as the cell shape, nucleus, mitochondria, and other organelles, which can be studied and analyzed.
This device is used for identifying Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, parasite eggs, as well as observing yeasts and fungal hyphae.
